A Modern Classicist

The musicologist Erich Valentin said of the composer on the occasion of his 75th birthday in 1969: »Jacobi is one of those rare people with an exemplary, principled point of view. He went his own way throughout his life paying no heed to fashion or trend, free from opportunism.« At the end of his life, Wolfgang Jacobi had created about 200 compositions, and had written several textbooks. Unfortunately, some of these works have not survived. Many of the early works were lost during the Second World War, or did not stand up to Jacobi’s self-criticism and were destroyed by him.

»I can only compose at home within my own four walls. But how I do it, I really cannot explain. Reger is supposed to have said that the notes emerge out of the manuscript paper. Something like that happens to me, too.« Wolfgang Jacobi, 1967

Despite his strong links with the traditions of music, Wolfgang Jacobi was very open to innovation. He studied, for instance, the range of expression of the saxophone, an instrument for which little art music had been written. In the early nineteen-thirties at the request of his friend, the saxophone player Sigurd Rascher, he wrote a Sonata for Saxophone and Piano, a work that Rascher played all over the world.

Jacobi’s love of Italy, and of the language and music of the country, finds expression above all in his compositions for voice. Most of these are settings of Italian texts, some of which he translated himself. It is not surprising that these works were frequently performed in Italy. The moving composition on the Passion of Christ, »Il Pianto della Vergine«, was a great favourite.

It was one of Wolfgang Jacobi’s priorities to try to help young people develop a love of music. He wrote various works on music education, some exercise pieces, and compositions for performance in schools. Among them is the opera for schools, »The Jobsiade«.
